Mineral Characterization in Human Body: A Dual Energy Approach

Kidney and uteric stones are a common cause of pain disturbance in numerous people worldwide, as they tend to reappear. There several studies investigating the association urolithiasis nephrolithiasis with atherosclerosis, patients suffering from former diseases were found have been diagnosed atherosclerotic plaques. Hydroxyapatite calcium oxalate most mineral crystals both kidney/uteric plaques’ calcifications. Even though for smaller than 5 mm surgery is not recommended, knowledge stone composition an important tool physician order provide better treatment patient. The crystal characterization calcifications 3 (spotty calcifications) will assist limit possibility myocardial infraction stroke, presence hydroxyapatite indicates possible plaque rapture. To this aim, dual energy (DE) X-ray method was developed work. calcium/phosphorus mass ratio (mCa/mP) determined through analytical simulations results verified experimentally. Both monoenergetic polyenergetic simulation implemented hydroxyapatite, carbonate thicknesses ranging 0.50 3.00 mm, at 100 ?m increments, obtain optimized irradiation conditions. experimental verification proposed performed using tube combined high resolution complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel sensor (APS) detector. Mann–Whitney U test indicated that statistically significant differences between different types minerals examined 0.70 or higher.
